Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Bihar: IMD Issues Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Bihar, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts in the coming days. The alert comes as part of the IMD’s regular monsoon updates, and it warns of potential flooding, waterlogging, and disruption in daily life due to persistent downpours expected across the state.

According to the IMD, districts in north and northeast Bihar—including Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, and Purnia—are likely to receive the heaviest rainfall. Moderate to heavy showers are also predicted in the southern and central parts of the state, including Patna, Gaya, and Nalanda. The department has issued a yellow and orange alert for many regions, urging residents and local administrations to stay cautious and prepare for emergency measures.

The anticipated rainfall is attributed to a strong low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal, which is moving inland and strengthening due to favorable monsoon conditions. This weather pattern is expected to persist for the next 48 to 72 hours, with intense rain spells particularly during the evening and nighttime.

Local authorities have begun preparations to mitigate the effects of the expected weather. Municipal corporations in major cities like Patna have initiated drain-clearing operations to prevent waterlogging in low-lying areas. The Disaster Management Department of Bihar has also put emergency response teams on alert and advised district officials to monitor vulnerable zones closely.

Farmers have been advised to take precautions to protect their standing crops, especially in flood-prone regions. The state agriculture department has issued guidelines for managing paddy fields and vegetable crops to reduce the risk of water-induced damage.

Residents are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to stay updated with official weather bulletins. Schools in certain districts may remain closed if conditions worsen.

Bihar often faces challenges during the monsoon season, with flash floods and overflowing rivers causing widespread damage. The IMD’s early alert system plays a crucial role in minimizing risks by providing timely information to citizens and authorities.

The situation is being monitored closely, and further updates will be provided as the weather pattern evolves. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant, follow safety protocols, and cooperate with local administration during this period of heightened rainfall activity.
